On Friday, August 12 Girl Scout Daisies, Brownies, Juniors, and Cadettes arrived at the Southwest Council Center in Temecula to spend the next 24-hours experiencing “Troop Beverly Hills” GSSGC-style! The first sounds to greet the scouts were voices singing campfire songs such as “Little Red Wagon,” “Boom-Chicka-Boom” and many others. In all, 2 Daisies, 10 Brownies, 20 Juniors, and 20 Cadettes attended the overnight event. The event was coordinated by Ms. Mary Frances “Fair Mary” Sawyer, Director of Program for the Girl Scouts of San Gorgonio Council. Fairy Mary’s dog, Miss Ditto, was also there and all the girls loved playing with her, too.
Once Fairy Mary explained the purpose of the event, for girls to learn money-management skills, the Girl Scouts were excited to complete their math packets to earn money to spend on the crafts and activities that were available. There were groups working on the packets together. The younger girls stayed in the main room and the older girls went into the garage to work. All groups were completing some of the steps towards earning the financial literacy badges for their age level.
Later that night, the scouts watched “Troop Beverly Hills,” a fun, entertaining comedy starring, Shelly Long. Once the movie was over, Girl Scouts went outside with chalk and watched a meteor shower, while many girls also worked on chalk art.
The next day, scouts were making tutus, crowns, and tiaras and getting their nails painted. The Daisies and Brownies were playing games and making friendship bracelets to earn the “Making Friends” badge. Juniors made many pretty bracelets, necklaces, rings, and earrings to earn their “Jeweler” badge. Cadettes earned their “Woodworker” badge by designing and building wooden, decorative signs.
The whole experience was really fun and interesting! I would definitely recommend it to other Girl Scouts in every region of our Council.
