Gold Award Spotlight: Aubrey’s 2-day tennis camp

Aubrey’s passion for tennis is remarkable. The Girl Scout Gold Award earner offered a two-day, after-school tennis camp for middle school youth at the Boys and Girls Club of Murrieta on August 22 and 23, 2013. Aubrey gathered six volunteers from the Mesa Tennis Team and a family friend who flew down from Sacramento to help with instruction and overall organization.

Aubrey introduce tennis to disadvantaged kids who would not ordinarily have the opportunity to play the sport; the kids learned tennis basics, such as warming up, stretching, racquet handling, drills and tennis vMcCoyPictureocabulary. During scheduled break periods, Aubrey provided healthy fruit snacks, water and sports drinks to the participants. Local teens from her high school also donated time to help run the tennis camp.

Mentoring twelve middle school kids has taught Aubrey  patience and given her the confidence to handle any challenge that may arise. Due to the success of the clinic, the Murrieta Boys & Girls Club, in conjunction with the Mesa Tennis Team, plans to make this a regular event and a local tennis pro has even agreed to continue to mentor students who’ve participated. Aubrey will officially receive her Gold Award on April 27, 2014 along with other recipients of the San Gorgonio Council at the annual Gold & Silver Awards Gala.
